Microservices, or microservices architecture, is a service-oriented architecture — a way of building software applications that are divided into smaller, independent, combinable service units that work together to provide the overall functionality of the application.

Each microservice, or component, is continually developed and maintained separately from the other microservices.

Microservices are often connected through RESTful APIs, so they have access to a wide range of tools and solutions from the extensive web services ecosystem.

Within this approach, no one beats Amazon Web Services. She is one of the best examples of a company that really practices what it preaches: uses microservices internally. And it shares eight key drivers for its own internal adoption of microservices:

  1. choose the right tool for the job;
  2. improve resilience and security;
  3. lower costs with granular scaling;
  4. optimize team productivity;
  5. create new compositions easily;
  6. try and fail safely;
  7. adopt technology faster;
  8. deploy resources securely and quickly.
