Roadcard migrates Pamcard system to the AWS cloud with the help of Flexa Cloud

Project raised levels of availability and monitoring of services and improved flexibility, among other benefits.

A Roadcard is an Electronic Freight Payment Institution (IPEF) approved by the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT). Leader in the sector, for more than a decade it has offered the market the platform pamcard, the most complete and integrated payment solution for road freight transport (TRC) in the country.

Headquartered in São Paulo, it has a business unit in Blumenau (SC) and a team of TRC specialists that covers the entire national territory.

Since 2019 Roadcard has been a Flexa Cloud customer, when it migrated the website to the cloud. In January 2022, the partnership tightened even more when the Pamcard solution was migrated to AWS.

This project, carried out completely remotely, was an absolute success, despite the great challenges. And it is about him that we are going to tell you in detail throughout this article — at the end, check out the testimony of the IT manager, Miriam Alborghetti.

Challenge

Improve the availability and level of monitoring of Pamcard system services

With the Pamcard solution, Roadcard allows contractors to pay freight, toll vouchers, fuel vouchers, manage expenses and generate the Transport Operation Identifier Code (CIOT).

We are therefore talking about a technology company that streamlines and provides security, optimizing its customers' operations. “At the same time, we improve the lives of truck drivers, giving them more and more freedom of choice and ideal conditions to practice their profession”, he points out. Miriam Alborghetti, IT manager at Roadcard.

In 2022, Roadcard's IT team faced the challenge of optimizing availability and monitoring the level of services. “The environment was on-premise and the internal team lacked knowledge to make the evolution to the cloud”, says Miriam Alborghetti.

The executive details that the occurrences of unavailability were more frequent and, in addition, "the supplier that served us until then could not identify and solve the problems with the speed that was necessary".

Solution

Move application to AWS cloud under strategy Lift and Reshape.

The Flexa Cloud team then went into the field to accelerate the migration process to the AWS cloud. Basically, it was a race against time, as more than 3 customers — around 25 users — ramped up usage, overloading the infrastructure behind Pamcard.

An update of the database version was performed, following the approach Lift and Reshape. In this strategy, applications are moved to the cloud and a high level of optimization is introduced to operate them efficiently, without significant cost increases and taking advantage of virtualization resources.

Despite the technical challenges, the project was a success. All the work by Flexa Cloud specialists together with Roadcard's IT team was done remotely, in just three months.

“The impact for users in the migration of the environment was very low, restoring the service in a few hours. We are even working on the evolution to the PostgreSQL database and on the refactoring of some processes into microservices”, celebrates Miriam Alborghetti.

Oracle database version migration

In the wake of this process, a database version upgrade was also performed. Until then, Roadcard used the 11g version of Oracle and now has the 19c version.

In this way, the company gained:

  • improved performance — including query processing optimizations, execution engine refinements, and better utilization of hardware resources;
  • greater flexibility — using the AWS RDS feature, it is possible to clone the database with several terabytes of data in a few minutes to simulate changes safely and quickly, paying only for the hours the additional bank is available.
  • automatic crash recovery — which helps reduce downtime in case of hardware or software bugs;
  • among other advantages.

Result

Mitigation of unavailability events and gain in flexibility, among other advantages.

For Roadcard's IT leader, relying on Flexa's services has been fundamental.

The executive says that the partnership came in very handy, as Roadcard now has “support in the process of technological evolution, specialized support in choosing new tools, security implementations and gains in observability”.

Among the benefits perceived by the company, the following stand out:

  • more stable environment and with real-time monitoring;
  • technological evolution more agile and efficient;
  • gain from greater availability;
  • flexibility to, for example, grow or shrink instances on demand;
  • e consolidation of strategic partnership with Flexa Cloud, an AWS specialist company.

"The knowledge of the Flexa team helps us in recovering incidents more quickly. In addition, Flexa has been building a knowledge base to support us in times of critical incidents".
