Introduction
China has just achieved a significant milestone in the field of artificial intelligence (AI)Chinese researchers have successfully trained a generative AI (GAI) model using multiple data centers and different GPU architectures. This feat is remarkable, especially considering the technical challenges of integrating different types of GPUs into a single training environment, especially when geographically distributed.
Chinese Technological Advancement in AI
Patrick Moorhead, chief analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, recently revealed that China is the first country to achieve such an achievement. This breakthrough is crucial for the country, as it allows it to continue advancing in AI despite restrictions imposed by sanctions that limit access to high-performance chips produced in the United States.
Overcoming Technological Constraints
Due to sanctions, China faces challenges in acquiring the most advanced chips, such as Nvidia's high-performance GPUs. In response, Chinese researchers have been working to integrate GPUs of different brands and capabilities into a single training cluster. This includes combining sanctioned chips, such as the Nvidia A100, with more affordable GPUs, such as Huawei's Ascend 910B and the Nvidia H20.
Historically, this hardware mix resulted in significant efficiency losses. However, recent advances indicate that China has managed to mitigate these issues, allowing its AI models to continue evolving without relying exclusively on the most powerful chips.
Chinese Leadership in AI Educational Institutions
This progress isn't isolated. I always emphasize in my lectures that China is a major global player in AI. To illustrate, of the top 10 artificial intelligence educational institutions in the world, nine are Chinese, leaving the renowned MIT in tenth place. This statistic reinforces China's dedication and massive investment in AI research and development.
Conclusion
China's determination to advance AI, even in the face of significant obstacles, demonstrates its position as a global leader in this field. As the saying goes, "necessity is the mother of invention," and China is proving this by finding innovative solutions to continue progress.
