Getting Started with AWS Snowball

Snowball is a petabyte-scale data transport solution that uses secure devices designed to transfer large amounts of data in and out of the AWS Cloud. Using Snowball solves common challenges related to large-scale data transfers, such as high network costs, time-consuming transfers, and security concerns. Customers currently use Snowball to migrate analytics data, genomics data, video libraries, image repositories, backups, and to archive portions of data center shutdowns, tape replacement or application migration projects. Transferring data with the Snowball is simple, fast, more secure and can be as low as one-fifth the cost of high-speed Internet transfer.

With Snowball, you don't need to write any code or purchase hardware to transfer your data. Simply create a task in the AWS Management Console (“Console”) and a Snowball device will be automatically shipped to you. When you receive it, connect the device to your local network, download and run the Snowball client (“Client”) to establish a connection, then use the client to select the file directories you wish to transfer to the device. The client will encrypt and transfer the files to the device at high speed. When the transfer is complete and the device is ready to be returned, the E Ink shipping label is automatically updated and you can monitor the status of the task via Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS), text messages, or directly in the Console.
